Cholesterol

Cholesterol

Produce Description:

Cholesterol is a fat-like substance that is found in every cell of the body. While some is needed to make hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help with digestion, your body creates all of the cholesterol that it needs to function. It is still found in some of the foods that you eat.

Cholesterol travels through the bloodstream in tiny packages called lipoproteins, which are made of lipids (fat) on the inside and proteins on the outside. There are 2 forms of lipoproteins: low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Maintaining healthy levels of both types is important for the body.

Too much cholesterol in the blood, known as high blood cholesterol, makes for a greater chance of coronary heart or artery disease. The higher the LDL levels, the higher the chances of coronary heart disease.

Foods such as oatmeal or high-fiber foods, fish, nuts, olive oil, and those with added plant sterols or stanols have been associated with lowering high cholesterol levels.
