    Collard greens are believed to have originated in prehistoric times. Ancient Greeks grew multiple varieties of collard greens. Collard greens are related to kale and cabbage. They are good for boosting the immune system, skin, vision, bones, high cholesterol and prevention of cancers.

    Collard greens are low in calories, have no cholesterol and rich in fiber.  The phytonutrient diindolylmethane has antibacterial and antiviral properties. Vitamin C in collard greens boosts the immune system and helps prevent flu-like viral infections. Collard greens contain vitamin A which is responsible for promoting healthy mucus membranes, skin and vision. Vitamin K helps promote healthy bones.  Collard greens are also a good source of B vitamins, iron, calcium, copper, manganese, selenium and zinc.

    The dietary fiber in collard greens helps control LDL cholesterol and prevents hemorrhoids, constipation and colon cancer. The phytonutrients in collard greens have anti-cancer properties. They can prevent prostate, breast, cervical, colon and ovarian cancers.  Collard greens contain folate. which helps prevent neural tube birth defects in newborns.
