    Anise

    Produce Description:

Anise is believed to have originated in Egypt. It has been grown in England since the middle of the 16th century. It was once used to pay taxes. Anise can be used as an ingredient in antiseptics, promotes cardiovascular health and boosts the immune system.

The chemical compounds found in anise function as antioxidants and prevent disease. The essential volatile oil of the seeds is called anethole. This is where the sweet aromatic flavor comes from. The B vitamin pyridoxine helps brain function. Anise contains copper, which helps in the production of red blood cells.  Vitamins A and C in anise work as antioxidants.

The oil of the seeds can be found in medicines such as stomachics, antiseptics, antispasmodics, carminatives, digestives, expectorants, stimulants, and tonics. Potassium  in anise seeds helps control heart rate and blood pressure.
